Launch of pre-election campaign

CARE Bangladesh, Action Aid and Daily Jugantor launched a countrywide pre-election campaign titled "Janatar Ishtehar" or "People's Manifesto" on 09 September 2013 at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, DU. “Janatar Ishtehar” is aimed to capture the voices of the grassroots people and influence the political parties for incorporating citizens' demand in their election manifesto. Anowarul Haq, Director- Extreme Rural Poverty Program of CARE Bangladesh said, "There is an inextricable relation between progress of poverty eradication of a nation and its democracy. Democracy is a continuous process. We believe our efforts today will have positive impact on the nation's future generations and also building a more democratic Bangladesh". Farah Kabir, Country Director of Action Aid Bangladesh mentioned during the inauguration that citizens' participation is basic to democracy. It is essential to create an enabling environment for citizens to express their voices and demands to the political parties, especially the voices of the marginalized. Executive Editor of Daily Jugantor Saiful Alam highlighted that national issues might not reflect the local issues of different regions of Bangladesh just like the issues of the rich or educated would be different from those of the poor and extreme poor. Among honorable guests Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin, Presidium member from Awami League; Opposition Leader's press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan; Bimal Biswas, General Secretary of the Workers' Party; Md Atiqul Islam, Chairman - BGMEA, Prof. Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Chairman - Jatiya Nirbachon Porjobekkhon Parishad (JANIPOP) and others were present in the launching event.

This is an event where organizers have been privileged to bring the policy makers, think tanks, teachers, journalists, activists as well as political leaders to the same table to discuss issues and provide their valuable thoughts around this important initiative. Participants welcomed the initiative and opined that it will contribute to manifesto development process of major political parties and will contribute to strengthen democratic processes.

Eight regional dialogues are planned to be held in Khulna, Chittagong, Rangamati, Sylhet, Barishal, Rangpur, Rajshahi and Dhaka beginning from 12 September, 2013 in Khulna division. A sample survey will also be undertaken to collect data and demands of the people across Bangladesh.
