Advocacy workshop takes the Integration of HIV/AIDS services with Bangladesh Police and Prison Directorate forward

Government and NGO officials discussed ways to expedite the process of HIV/AIDS service integration

A Workshop on Integration of HIV/AIDS services with Bangladesh Police and Prison Directorate was arranged by National AIDS/STD Control, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Health Service Division, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) with technical and logistic support from Save The Children and CARE Bangladesh on 21 June 2021 at Spectra Convention Center, Gulshan-1, Dhaka.

The event was chaired by Kazi Jebunnessa Begum, Additional Secretary (WH), Health service Division, MoHFW, Prof. (Dr.) Md. Shamiul Islam, Line Director, TB-Leprosy and AIDS/STD Programme, DGHS and Additional Secretary (Police and NTCM), Public Security Division were the chief guests of the workshop. Also, high officials of Directorate of Prison, Ministry of Home, Ministry of Health, Save the Children and CARE Bangladesh were also present in the event.

The objective of the workshop was to create an inter-ministry consensus among Ministry of Health (MoH), MoHFW and Directorate of Prison to initiate the integration of HIV prevention services in Prison and Police Hospitals. After a fruitful dialogue, it was decided that Proposal stating the process, methodology and other components of integrating HIV services into prison setting and Police hospitals should be developed in short time and will be sent to home ministry for their review and approval. Subsequently, Ministry of Health will conduct a meeting with Ministry of Home on the proposal and find ways to expedite the process of integrating the services into prison setting and police hospital. At the same time, Ministry of Health will be creating the steering committee for overseeing this process after discussion with Ministry of Home about the proposal.
