Meet Majuma —a courageous Rohingya woman, who has transformed her life through determination and hard work. Once trapped in the cycle of despair, she is now a shining example of self-reliance, thanks to innovative sack gardening techniques that allowed her to cultivate vegetables in limited spaces.Displaced from Myanmar in 2017, Majuma’s journey was anything but easy. With an unemployed husband and five children, life in Camp-16 was filled with uncertainty. She had no means to fulfill even the smallest desires for her family.

When she joined the Green Skills Development (GSD) – Activity 2 project in March 2025, which is jointly implemented by CARE and WFP, her fate began to turn its tides. Through training, coaching, and support from the project, Majuma received the means to transform her life with quality seeds, essential materials, and financial assistance to start vegetable farming.

Using the knowledge gained, she began cultivating four types of vegetables in sacks. Within three months, she harvested enough to feed her family daily and sell the surplus — ensuring a steady income. Her children now enjoy nutritious meals, and she feels proud as a mother.

Recognizing the high demand for vegetables in the camp, Majuma set up a small shop in her home. She now sells produce from her garden and collects vegetables from others in the camp. Her daily profit ranges from ৳300 to ৳400, part of which she saves. She even encouraged her husband to sell vegetables door-to-door, doubling their household income and bringing solvency in the family.

“What began as a small garden has grown into a home-based local selling spot — which is helping my family and inspiring others” – Majuma

Looking ahead, Majuma plans to expand her vegetable farming and start small-scale poultry rearing with her husband.

Thanks to the support and guidance from the GSD- Activity 2 project, Majuma now lives a life of dignity. Her bright smile is a powerful reminder that with strong will, even limited resources can help one to overcome immense challenges.
